Fish farming is quite a lucrative venture these days. China certainly tops the charts with a major 62% holding of the world’s fish farming practices. We all know that there is a rising demand for fish all across the globe. Probably this explains why commercial fish farming is promoted by countries at large. Before delving deep, are you aware of what fish farming is all about?

‘Some call it pisciculture but fish farming is a technique that’s used worldwide to raise breeds of fish in specially designed enclosures like ponds or fish farming tanks.’ Countries enjoying lush blue coastal lines are greatly at advantage for this purpose. Fish farming is also a major form of aquaculture. Breeds that are grown using this technique include Salmon, Catfish, carp and tilapia.

Fish is quite a crowd-pleasing food item all over the world. Hence, the demand is always on an increasing scale. In such circumstances, the act of catching fish from the wild is not enough to cut the grades. What it does however, is cater effectively to the growing demand are fish farming tanks.

Using these tanks, varied species of fish are grown and raised exclusively. This also cuts-down the chances of trawling. As a result, more and more marine creatures get to thrive in the wild. In a nutshell, pisciculture certainly contributes to the balance of nature’s ecosystem.

Fish farming tanks are a great alternative to the usual open sea aquaculture. Plenty of culture tanks are used to stock and raise breeds of fish. Having said this, do you realize the importance of filtration in such intensive fish farming techniques? Well, filtration is absolutely crucial since standard water quality ensure better lives of livestock.

Since water in the culture tanks are recycled very often, it is imperative to monitor both quality and the temperature of water. In such cases, water is either treated using biofilter to slacken the impacts of chemicals and toxic products or manually handled by skimming off the solid particulate matters in the water.

When there is fish in the tank, it is quite obvious that there are fish wastes too. This debris if left unchecked contaminates the water on a whole and makes it unsustainable for the delicate aquatic creatures. Fish wastes are often nitrogenous and dissolve in water very easily, thereby tarnishing the quality of it.

To treat the water effectively, two or more strains of autotrophic bacteria are added to the water. Since bio-filtration is an aerobic process that deals with the breakdown of nitrogen, commonly found in the fish wastes, these autotrophic bacteria first converts harmful ammonia into nitrite (NO2-) and finally into nitrate (NO3-). This by-product is rarely toxic and is easily tolerated by the cultured species.

Not to forget, processing the water by passing it through a de-nitrification chamber or diluting it by adding clean water is a much hassle-free and easier option.

Fish farming tanks through biological wastes put a technically cutting-edge recirculation system into use. Here, water in the closed tanks is exchanged frequently via mechanical or biological filtration systems.

Bear in mind that not all water is exchanged or processed thoroughly. A recirculation system in aquaculture is a popular pick since it promotes optimum growing and breeding conditions for fish.
