How to Build a Vertical Aquaponics System

To build a vertical aquaponics system, you will require the following supplies: plastic cups, 15ft 4-inch PVC pipes, elbows, T-Connectors, drums, aquarium tubing, cable ties, scrap wood, power drills, hole saws, water pumps, air pumps and electrical tape. Similarly, you should choose fishes and plants that would survive in your vertical aquaponics system. Using these supplies, you can build a vertical aquaponics system in few short steps.

The Very First Step

First of all, you should cut the PVC pipes into 2 separate 14-inch segments and 14 different one foot segments. The pieces must be measured and cut with lots of care & concern. Now, take the one foot pieces and drill neat three inch holes.

The holes must be drilled in 13 one foot pieces. And, in one of the 1-foot pieces you should drill a small 1-inch hole. The hole should be drilled more towards the sides. Label the PVC pipe with the 1-inch hole and store it separately.

Establishing a Strong bond

Moving on, it’s time to assemble the PVC pipes together. You should take the 14-inch pieces and connect them using an elbow. The elbows should be taped neatly with the PVC pipe. Conversely, take the one foot pieces and connect them to form a long tube.

To create a clean pattern, you must make use of the T-shaped connectors. Once you are done, you should add the last piece and close the line of one foot PVC pipes.

Attaining the Right shape

In most cases, the PVC pipes would be arranged to form a closed rectangle. Irrespective of the shape you choose, remember to check if the PVC pipes are aligned correctly and connected without any gaps. In one end, you must assemble the drain.

The Complicated Part!

Consequently, you should make holes in the base of 12-plastic cups. These cups must be placed on top of the PVC-drilled pipes. Above all, the entire structure must be placed on top of the plastic drums, with the drainage unit right above one barrel.

In this barrel, you should assemble the water pump and air pump. The air and water pumps can be used to add fishes into the vertical aquaponics system.
